St Thomas More Catholic High School

Key Stage 3 Grading System

At St Thomas More Catholic High School, we use a clear and consistent approach to assessing pupil progress throughout Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9). Our grading system helps pupils, parents/carers, and teachers understand how pupils are progressing in their learning and what steps they can take next.

We use four descriptors to communicate progress:

Mastering

Descriptor: The pupil demonstrates a deep and thorough understanding of the concepts. They can apply their knowledge independently in a range of contexts, including unfamiliar and complex ones.

Key Characteristics:

  • Exceeds age related expectations in attainment and outcomes
  • Applies skills and knowledge confidently and consistently
  • Makes connections across topics or subjects
  • Justifies reasoning and explains processes clearly
  • Takes initiative in learning and problem-solving

Securing

Descriptor: The pupil has a secure understanding of the expected knowledge and skills for their age or year group. They can apply their learning with increasing independence and accuracy.

Key Characteristics:

  • Meets age related expectations in attainment and outcomes
  • Applies knowledge and skills in familiar contexts
  • Makes few errors and can correct them when prompted
  • Shows confidence in learning with occasional support

Developing

Descriptor: The pupil shows a partial understanding of the concepts and can complete tasks with support or scaffolding. They are making progress but have gaps in knowledge.

Key Characteristics:

  • Working towards meeting age related expectations in attainment and outcomes
  • Needs regular guidance to apply knowledge
  • Inconsistent accuracy and understanding
  • Begins to use key vocabulary and concepts appropriately

Emerging

Descriptor: The pupil is at an early stage of learning. They require significant support to access curriculum content and complete tasks.

Key Characteristics:

  • Working below age related expectations in attainment and outcomes
  • Basic awareness of key ideas but little independent application
  • Limited vocabulary and conceptual understanding
  • Requires repeated modelling and intervention

Why Use This System?

  • It gives a clear picture of where each pupil is in their learning journey.
  • It helps teachers tailor support and challenge to individual needs.
  • It allows pupils and parents to track progress and identify next steps.

How Will My Child’s Progress Be Reported?

You will receive regular updates through sharing pupil progress points, school reports and parent evenings, showing which descriptor your child is currently working at in each subject. In the annual report and parents evening, teachers will also provide guidance on how your child can move to the next stage.

If you have any questions about our KS3 grading system, please contact your child’s subject teacher or the school office.
